Shafer Insurance Agency was established in 1900 in Byesville, Ohio by the late John B. Shafer. He moved the agency to Cambridge and ran it until he passed in 1923. His son, L. M. “Bing” Shafer, obtained his insurance license in 1921 and continued the family business until 1977. Third generation, John R. Shafer, joined his father in the agency in 1956 and continued the family legacy for 63 years.

 

After John R. Shafer’s passing in 2019, the agency moved to the 4th generation of Shafer family ownership with John’s children, Rick and Mike Shafer and Sue Rakowich.

 

In 2020, long-time associate, Mindy Eltringham became the sole agency owner. Mindy has been with the agency for over 25 years. She spent 22 of those years working alongside John before his passing. As the owner, she plans to continue his legacy by keeping the Shafer name and everything it stands for including established values, and excellent customer service. 

 

The agency is staffed by senior agent, Mindy Eltringham with 26 years at the agency. Mindy is licensed in property/casualty and life/accident/health. Jacilyn Cox has been with us 11 years and is licensed in property/casualty and life/accident/health and is also a notary. Shannon Shiflett has been with Shafer for 4 years and is a licensed agent. 

 

Shafer Insurance has strived to put the client first and render service that is best for the policyholder. We welcome clients to stop in the office and pay their premium or review their coverage. We want you to feel welcome! When our agency was founded, we delivered policies on horseback. Although we don’t do that any longer, we still like the personal approach.

If you have a farm, we can insure you too. We insure small businesses to large commercial accounts and write various types of bonds. We also write life and disability income insurance.

 

Our hours are 8-5 Monday-Friday, evenings and Saturdays by appointment.
